Glass Art Society Lifetime Achievement Award

CHICAGO, IL — Dan Dailey was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday as the Glass Art Society began their 43rd Annual Conference. The ceremony honoring Dailey at the Palmer House Hilton featured presentation from Dailey on his body of work, and a keynote address by Chicago artist Theaster Gates. Three days of workshops, seminars, demonstrations, exhibits and other events began Thursday and continued through Saturday, March 22.

Albert Paley delivers the Wilson Lecture.

Albert Paley delivered the Willson Lecture, focused on the melding of glass and steel in his work. Paley is a Philadelphia native who began his career as a jeweler and began working with iron in 1970. Paley's ironwork pays homage to European art nouveau and American abstract expressionism. He is recognized in the metalsmithing community for his extraordinary work with ferrous metals.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is the Glass Art Society's highest honor, given in recognition of significant and sustained contributions to the field of glass art, technical innovation, exemplary leadership, dedication to education, and support for and promotion of glass art.

Museum of Glass Artist Residency

TACOMA, WA — Artist Dan Dailey was a Museum of Glass Visiting Artist from Wednesday, December 4 through Sunday, December 8. Dailey’s residency was sponsored by Karen and Marc Jaffe through the Fuel Their Fire program, and concluded with a lecture in the Hot Shop on Sunday, December 8 at 2:00 pm. The lecture was streamed live on the museum’s website.

"About three years ago I began experimenting with a way to use certain techniques and processes to create a glass mural. During the blowing of parts for my sculpture, and for some vessel series, we often make a 'cup' during the first stages of blowing the form. The color cup method allows me to apply colors and manipulate them in a way that will be stretched and overlapped and faded when the form is blown out to its final dimensions." —Dan Dailey

University of the Arts Exhibition: Art Unleashed

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Art Unleashed, an exhibition of artwork in all media from talented University of the Arts students, faculty and alumni, opened on Wednesday at Dorrance Hamilton Hall. Dan Dailey's work was featured with illustrator Jerry Pinckney in the Alumni Spotlight exhibition. The exhibition is the university's annual fundraising event to support their Sam S. McKeel Promising Young Artists Scholarship fund. The university School of Music's Bucket Drum Ensemble and Student Jazz Quartet performed for the entire evening from the Solmssen Court Stage. Hundreds of original works by students and faculty will be on display for sale through Saturday, April 13 from noon to 5p.m.

Dailey graduated from UArts (then known as Philadelphia College of Art) in 1969, with a BFA in Crafts. He received the 2007 Silver Star Alumni Award and the 2001 President's Distinguished Artist Award, and he has served on the University's National Advisory Board since 1988.

TORONTO, ON — Dan Dailey presented a photo survey of his recent work and spoke to an audience of art collectors and connoisseurs hosted by the Gardiner Museum on Sunday. The lecture took place in the midst of Dailey’s new exhibition at the Sandra Ainsley Gallery. With forty works from six different series on view, the comprehensive body of work illuminates the exceptionally large new space of the Sandra Ainsley Gallery located a few minutes away from the Museum in the Don Valley Parkway and Eglinton area. Dailey is exhibiting in Toronto for the first time in ten years.

The Gardiner Museum is the only museum in Canada devoted exclusively to ceramic art. It is located on Queen’s Park just south of Bloor Street in Toronto, opposite the Royal Ontario Museum. Its permanent collection of over 2,900 pieces, includes works from the Ancient Americas, Italian Renaissance, English Delftware, Chinese and Japanese porcelain, European porcelain, and a contemporary gallery. In addition to the permanent collections, the museum mounts three temporary exhibitions per year.
